Mariages! (2004)

Filmgirl: Reel Artsy

[Editor's Note: This is the first review from our latest French contributor Marc Omeyer]

In a charming little village in the south of France, on a sunny week end, all is set for the mariage of Johanna and Benjamin. Both young and charming. All is going to be fine, the kind of perfect ceremony every girl dreams of. Nothing must break the romantic atmosphere of this wonderful moment. Nothing. Except the best man, Jean Dujardin. Has he forgotten the rings? What about discovering his wife having an affair at the very moment he should go on stage for his congrats speech?

While all goes out of control, in an exhilirating twister of wonderfully written scenes, the two young lovers will face the tornado of hopes, delusions, revelations and bitterness of everyone around them. Will they find their own way to love? Will they marry at all, with the full understanding of what it takes to engage oneself on this adventurous trip?

Besides a brilliant cast of some of the best French actors, Mariages! is a movie you'll want to see again. Great lines, beautiful characters and a perfect pace. Writer and director Valérie Guignabodet offers French romantic comedy at its best. A wildly comic, acid and meaningful observation of men and women confronted to love, sex, time and truth.

Young Adult (2011)

Filmgirl: Film Gurl

“Everyone gets old. Not everyone grows up.”

- Young Adult

When I first saw the trailer to this film, it looked like a fun type of movie to see. So, I decided to check it out. I’m glad I did.

(Note: Before I go into the review, I will say that I really enjoy watching Charlize Theron on screen – she’s a very talented actress. In fact, I just recently saw another film she played in which she had a very strong performance and powerful role).

In any case, this film starts out very unconventional – it’s not your typical Hollywood type of movie. In actuality, it’s set more like an indie of film. The opening of the movie is not very fancy though it’s very honest. And, to be frank – that’s what I liked about it.

(Note: For those who have seen the movie, I was a bit surprised to see the opening credits and music play a bit after the film had started. Though, I did appreciate the honesty and realism depicted).

At the heart of it, this film is about growing up. It seems to be a “midlife crisis” type of movie where the main character, Mavis Gary (played by Charlize Theron), begins to reflect on her current life in search of her purpose. And, in doing so – she soon realizes the emptiness she’s feeling is due to the lack of purpose and meaning in her life.

So, she sets a course to find the answers by re-visiting her childhood town. In doing so, she begins to see all that she has missed out being away all these years. She starts comparing herself to others including her childhood friends which makes her feel more miserable.

As the days go by, she begins to see all that is missing in her life. And, she only sees that which she does not have which everyone else around her does. This results in causing her to go spiraling down as the film progresses causing her to finally hit rock bottom.

Though, after a series of mishaps and conversations with others who see the good in her and what she has accomplished – she slowly begins to realize all is not lost in the world. In a sense, the film really has a very positive spin on things even though her journey led her through many hardships she didn’t want to see.

(Note: Going into the film, I did read a few reviews citing it was a very dark movie. Though, after seeing it – I beg to disagree. It was actually a very enlightening picture which really makes you want to think about your own life and the meaning it has had for you so far).

At it’s core, this movie is really about growing up and realizing what life is all about. Though, before you can do this – you have to be a grown up yourself. And, that is the ironic part as some of her actions and behavior were a bit childish. In a sense, Mavis Gary was still a “young adult” until she grew up and realized her faults.

Overall, I really enjoyed the film. What I like about Charlize Theron is that she can play very different roles. At times, she can be very dramatic starring in more serious types of movies. On the other hand, she can also play more comedic roles being very funny and entertaining to watch, such as the case in this film.

If you’re looking for a very honest and entertaining film that explores the issues of the meaning of life and finding purpose, I do recommend this one.

David Fincher Goes on the Dark Side With The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

Filmgirl: Clarabela

Post image for David Fincher Goes on the Dark Side With The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

David Fincher’s English version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, based on the Stieg Larsen thriller takes a walk on the dark side. Fans of the trilogy about the heavily tattooed computer hacker, Lisbeth Salander waited anxiously to see how Fincher (Fight Club, The Social Network) would handle the movie and how young Rooney Mara would replace Noomi Rapace in the title role.

I am not sure if I can fairly compare the two movies or the two actresses, even though the movies are based on the same book, they are quite different. David Fincher’s Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is much darker and grittier than the Swedish movie.

One of the things I liked about the way Fincher made this movie, is that he didn’t Americanize the story.  Filmed in Uppsala and Stockholm, Sweden, the movie is distinctly Swedish with accents and everything.

Lisbeth Salander

Rooney Mara and Noomi Rapace as Lisbeth Salander

Rooney Mara’s Lisbeth Salander was different from Noomi Rapace’s portrayal of the character. While Rooney’s Lisbeth seemed more like a wounded bird who was mad at the whole world, Noomi’s Lisbeth was just plain angry and hated everyone. You could see the pain in Rooney’s eyes, masked by the dark hair, black eyeliner and piercings. This is a girl who has suffered, but has survived by not letting her emotions get in the way.

During one particularing brutal scene [which made me cry, even though I knew it was coming]. Director David Fincher didn’t pull the camera away from the terror and pain during this scene, which made it all the more brutal. Perhaps that was a good choice, but I could have gone without seeing it.

Mikael Blomkvist

I am not usually a fan a Daniel Craig, but he was perfect for the role of the disgraced journalist.  Unlike his role in the Bond films, as Mikael, Craig was out of his element when he discovers that the disappearance of a young girl is tied to a serial killer.

In the 2009 Swedish movie, the role was played by Michael Nyqvist, seen recently in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol.

Movie vs. Book vs. Movie

Daniel Craig as Mikael Blomkvist and Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander

Mikael Blomlvist has recently lost a libel suit. Disgraced and facing severe financial losses he takes a job with Henrik  Vanger in icy, northern Sweden. Vanger, a wealthy, aging businessman hires Mikael to allegedly write his memoirs, but the truth is he wants him to investigate the disappearance of his niece in 1964. Christopher Plummer plays the older Henrik and Julian Sands plays the younger Henrik in the 1964 flashbacks.

Soon, Mikael realizes he is over his head and needs an assistant to help with the research and he eventually contacts the mysterious girl with the dragon tattoo, Lisbeth Salander. Together, they unravel a decades long trail of murder and torture.

There are very few changes to the movie from the book. However, the change that was made is pretty major. Truthfully, it doesn’t ruin the movie, even if you have read all 3 novels. It just shortens the story a bit. I was not disappointed.

The movie includes scenes which lead into the next story, The Girl Who Played With Fire, hopefully that means they plan to film the remaining 2 movies of the trilogy.

Fans of the 2009 Swedish movie with Noomi Rapace and Michael Nyqvist can pick this movie apart, but I took them as totally different films using the same source material. What do you think?

So, what do you think of this version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo? Did you read the novels?
